New Product Alert: First Choice Velvet Dairy Dessert

I get so excited whenever I am presented with an opportunity to feature something from my home province, the Eastern Cape.   I’m an 80’s baby, at the time I was born there was quite a number of manufacturing plants in the Eastern Cape.  This created employment opportunities as a result a substantial number of people didn’t have to move to other provinces to get jobs.  Right now some of those factories are not in operation.  For this reason, I support the companies that are doing business and contributing to the community in that part of the country and can only hope they continue to grow. ..

First choice is a dairy range using milk sourced from naturally pasture-fed cows in the Eastern Cape farmlands of Woodlands Dairy.  Situated in Humansdorp, right in the heart of the Eastern Cape’s Dairy region and along the South Africa Garden Route, Woodlands Dairy employs over 400 people.

First Choice prides itself in offering nutritious and healthy treats for the whole family.

First Choice recently launched Velvet Dairy Dessert – a versatile flavoured dessert which can be whipped, shaken, frozen or stirred to create a variety of delectable desserts.  “It is truly what you make it,” said Tinus Pretorius, Woodlands Dairy General Manager.

First Choice Velvet is available in 1L packs in both chocolate and vanilla flavours and is tartrazine, colourant and MSG-free.  The ingredients for both variants are as follows:

Chocolate:

Full Cream Milk (51%), Cream, Sucrose, Skim Milk Powder, Cocoa, Dextrose, Fructose, Stabiliser (E472B, E407, E525, E552), Flavour (E1520).

Vanilla:

Full Cream Milk (53%), Cream, Sucrose, Skim Milk Powder, Dextrose, Fructose, Stabiliser (E472B, E410, E407, E552), Flavour (E1520).

The interesting thing about the products is their versatility:

On their own the Velvet desserts are delicious but I’ve thoroughly enjoyed them in the form of a milkshake.  I also tried them out in the form of  ice cream. The chocolate variant has a very good dark chocolate flavour profile which is completed well by a dash of brandy,  if one is looking for a tipsy ice cream.  The vanilla has a good flavor profile, however, it is a bit sweet for my liking, therefore, I added a bit of cream cheese to tone down the sweetness and it turned into a sensational palate pleaser.

Check out the different ways one can enjoy the products as recommended by the First Choice team:

Cream chocolate or vanilla milkshake:  simply add two parts whipped First Choice Velvet to one part First Choice Low Fat Milk.  Mix well and enjoy!

Traditional pudding: pour whipped First Choice Velvet into a bowl and chill for two hours.  Enjoy the creamy texture as a sweet treat.

Creamy vanilla ice cream: pour whipped First Choice Velvet into a bowl and freeze until set.  Serve with baked desserts or in a cone with sprinkles for the kids.

Chocolate mousse:  dissolve 2ml gelatin in 20ml water and create a smooth paste.  Add this to 1L First Choice Chocolate Velvet, mix well and pour into bowls and refrigerate for four hours before serving.
