New Product Alert: No-Fuss MOIR’S Mug Cakes To Satisfy Your Cravings

MOIR’S is shaking up the baking category by introducing easy, single-serve, baked desserts treats that can be eaten on the go and prepared almost anywhere you can find a microwave, spoon and a mug.

The product comes in 280 g boxes, each box consisting of 4 individual portion Mug Cakes.   The latter is a 70g packet that can be easily slipped into a purse or lunchbox.  The Mug Cakes are available in 3 variants;

Rich ChocolateCrème Caramel and Buttery Vanilla.  The MOIR’S team sent me some samples and it has been my pleasure to try out all of them. These are my opinions:

Okay, generally I love mug cakes because they are easy to put together and if I don’t have a muffin mix in the cupboard – mug cakes are the second thing that comes to mind.  Secondly, with mug cakes, you get to cure your sweet tooth almost instantly.  I have my go-to recipe witch requires self-raising flour, sugar, cocoa powder, egg, oil, milk and vanilla essence. With the MOIR’S offering, I found them to be just the right quantity – the portion size is not too much, not too little – just perfect.  A small quantity of milk is required to mix – I’ve broken it down to 3 tablespoons and 1 teaspoon.  Easy huh? Here are more things I love about them:

  • The Mug Cakes require very little milk to prepare.
  • They mix quite well, almost instantly using a spoon.
  • Each variant comes with 3 different ways of preparing them or just to add a special twist.
  • It takes about a minute to cook them in the microwave.  Yay for that!

So, it all boils down to taste, visual appeal and texture.  They rise when cooked and look like you would expect any other mug cake.   Comparing the MOIR’s Mug Cakes with the one I usually make at home, I found them be a little on the dense side.  The texture is more of hot sponge puddings and when eating them I was tempted to add a generous dose of unsweetened custard.  Other than that, they are quite moist, which I really liked but because they are dense they tend to stick to the roof of the mouth.

MOIR'S Mug Cakes - Rich Chocolate

Rich Chocolate – It’s indulgent, plus, love that it’s not too sweet and not too rich, allowing you to add your extras.  If you ask me, this is my favourite of the three flavours.

Crème Caramel – Beautiful flavour, delicious and the colour is spot on but it is slightly on the sweet side – if you love sweet desserts then this one is for you.

Buttery Vanilla – This flavour is divine, the aroma from it takes over your kitchen.  It is slightly sweet.  Next time I would add a few fresh raspberries to it before it goes into the microwave just to add a hint of sourness and balance the sweetness.

If you’re creative, you can play around with a few toppings or inclusions like marshmallows, chocolate chips or a dollop of peanut butter.  The recommended selling price for a 280g packet with 4 servings is R29.99.  Not bad at all.  So, go on and treat yourself!  Let us know what you think of the Mug Cakes.
