Ingredient of the Month: Ginger

 

I love my mom, uncles and aunts for instilling this in me even before I studied nutrition.  The natural ingredients in your kitchen can be your healer, yeah you heard right!  I spent some of my childhood on a rural farm – far away from town and shops and all we had to rely on was the good old natural ingredients for everything.

 

Ginger-Root-Benefits

 

Ginger is one of those ingredients – have it in your kitchen in both powder and natural form.  Several studies have been done to prove that ginger is as good as it gets with loads of health benefits such as; improving blood circulation, digestion, metabolism (helps with losing weight).  Ginger relieves morning sickness, helps prevent cancer, it is also known for keeping your heart healthy, relieving sore throat as well as preventing colds and flus.  Ladies you’ll also be happy to know that ginger helps reduce menstrual pain!

 

Ginger is a good source of vitamins A, C, E, and B-complex, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, silicon, sodium, iron, zinc, calcium and beta-carotene.  Add ginger to your cooking, some of my friends add a slice of ginger and lemon to their tea.  You can also make your own fresh ginger tea and this is how you do it;

 

1 small bulb of fresh ginger

2 cups of boiling water

Honey, to sweeten

A slice of lemon, to add a bit of tang

 

Directions: 

Allow the ginger to sit in the water for about 5 minutes.  Strain the tea into a cup, add honey and lemon.  Enjoy!

Some say this fresh ginger tea is good for relieving congestion.  So what’s stopping you from trying it?
